Mello did technically win. From what I've seen, most people win when they get what they want. Mello got what he wanted by dieing that way. He knew he was going to die and even confronted Near about it.

Your right, why did they have to end it there? They could have done several different things to keep people watching it. oh well, I guess they were running out of ideas.

Anyway, I think they were also running out of ideas and they had to put a decent and epic ending to the anime/manga.

Or maybe they ended it there and didn't want to mess it up like, the creator of Naruto did. I dislike Naruto now because, of what they have been doing.
